Sunlight AI raises $17.4M for independent practice OS

NY-based startup launches operating system to handle billing, HR, and admin for independent medical practices as physician consolidation accelerates

Sunlight AI raises $17.4M for independent practice OS

Independent physicians are vanishing from American medicine. Only 18% of physicians remain independent today as of January 1, 2026, down from nearly 60% two decades ago, according to industry research. Sunlight AI thinks it has found a way to reverse that tide.

The New York and Miami-based startup announced in October it had raised $17.4 million in seed funding to build what it describes as a "patient-to-payment operating layer" for solo practitioners and small medical groups. Basis Set Ventures led the round, with backing from Sofinn Ventures, Social Leverage, Actions Capital, Overlook Ventures, Early Light Ventures and individual investors including Frank Williams, who founded the healthcare company Evolent Health.

Sunlight's thesis is straightforward, if ambitious: give independent practices the administrative muscle of hospital systems without forcing doctors to surrender their autonomy. The platform consolidates billing, credentialing, payroll, HR and tax planning into a single system. The company also disclosed its acquisition of Bradford Medical Associates, a Massachusetts-based medical billing firm, calling it the first of several planned purchases.

The timing reflects a broader reckoning in healthcare. More than 85,000 independent practices were absorbed by hospitals or corporate groups between 2018 and 2026, driven in part by surging operating costs that rose roughly 11% in each of the past two years, according to the Medical Group Management Association. Medicare reimbursement rates, adjusted for inflation, have fallen roughly 33% since 2001. For small practices operating on thin margins, the math has become unforgiving.

Sina Chehrazi, Sunlight's founder and chief executive, has some credibility in the healthcare infrastructure space. He previously launched Nayya, a benefits navigation platform that has raised north of $100 million and earned him an EY Entrepreneur of the Year nod in New York earlier this year. His father, a neurosurgeon named Barry Chehrazi, now advises the company and apparently helped inspire the concept.

"Physicians need more time to see patients and make clinical decisions, and less time dedicated to operational overhead," Chehrazi said in the funding announcement. The sentiment is hardly novel, though executing on it has proven elusive for many well-funded predecessors.

Sunlight is wading into a crowded field. Athenahealth has long served independent practices with electronic health records and revenue cycle tools. Tebra, the product of a 2021 merger between Kareo and PatientPop, offers end-to-end practice management software that the company says now incorporates AI capabilities. Phreesia handles intake and digital payments. Candid Health, which automates revenue cycle management, pulled in $120 million in a Series D round in mid-2026, suggesting investors still see room for innovation in medical billing software.

What distinguishes Sunlight, at least in theory, is the breadth of its offer. Beyond standard billing and claims management, the company says it handles more esoteric tasks like out-of-network underpayment recovery and independent dispute resolution, the arbitration process insurers and providers use to settle payment disagreements. Sunlight claims its first batch of arbitration clients recovered "multiples" of the insurer's initial payment, though the company declined to share actual figures or success rates.

The Bradford Medical Associates acquisition gives Sunlight an instant customer base across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Whether the company can integrate multiple acquisitions while scaling its own technology remains an open question.

Chehrazi has framed the effort in almost populist terms, writing on LinkedIn that the funding marks the start of an era for "indie" medicine. The framing is deliberate. Research from Yale and the National Bureau of Economic Research found that physician prices jumped 15.1% within two years of hospital acquisitions, a pattern Chehrazi argues independent doctors can avoid if they gain operational scale without ceding control.

Whether software alone can counteract the structural forces pushing doctors into employment is another matter. Hospital systems can negotiate better rates with insurers, spread malpractice insurance costs across hundreds of physicians, and absorb temporary losses in ways that solo practitioners cannot. Technology helps, perhaps more than the founders expected when they began building the platform. But the consolidation wave reshaping American healthcare has deep economic roots that a billing platform, however sophisticated, may not fully address.
