Synapse Semiconductor is a frontier semiconductor startup spun out of Duke University's ECE department, building retina-inspired image sensors that perform AI computation directly on the sensor itself. Each pixel captures light and runs neural-network inference in the same device, eliminating the need for a separate GPU and dramatically reducing power consumption and latency for edge vision applications. Selected for Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch, Synapse Semiconductor is the first company to integrate all components of the computer vision stack into a single substrate.
