Dr. Alex Meakins is Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Luffy AI, a UK deeptech spinout pioneering neuroplastic AI for real-time adaptive control of industrial systems.
Dr. Meakins earned his PhD in Fusion and Plasma Physics from Imperial College London in 2008, then spent years as a beam spectroscopy physicist at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) on the Culham Campus near Oxford, and previously worked as a Senior Scientist at aerospace and defence firm Cobham.
His PhD thesis applied neural networks and data mining to plasma physics research, laying the intellectual foundation for Luffy AI's neuroplastic approach to machine intelligence at the edge.
At UKAEA, Dr. Meakins met co-founder Dr. Matthew Carr and together they co-founded Luffy AI in 2019 as a UKAEA spinout, with the company going on to raise an 8.1M GBP Series A led by BGF in July 2026.
Luffy AI's Adaptive Neural Controllers have been benchmarked at 800x fewer synapses and 400x less compute than traditional deep learning, targeting industrial motors that consume roughly 50% of the world's electricity.
