Jumpei Kashiwakura

Jumpei Kashiwakura is Co-Founder and CTO of Neubond, an Imperial College London spinout developing a wearable neuromuscular biofeedback device to help stroke patients regain mobility at home. He is driven by a mission to deliver life-changing technology to those who need it most, bridging the gap between cutting-edge neuroscience and accessible patient care.
Jumpei studied Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London and previously worked as a Senior Engineer at Toyota Motor Corporation, where he built deep expertise in systems engineering and hardware development. He co-founded Neubond after meeting Dr. Patrick Sagastegui Alva at Imperial while working on a prosthetic hand project.
Jumpei identified that stroke patients are discharged from hospital with little guidance on how to continue rehabilitation effectively, and set out to solve this with a device that monitors muscle activity and provides real-time biofeedback. His engineering background and clinical insight have been central to translating over a decade of Imperial lab research into a market-ready medical device.
Under Jumpei's technical leadership, Neubond won first place in the 2024 Imperial Venture Catalyst Challenge Health and Wellbeing track and secured support from the Innovate UK ICURe programme and a European Research Council Proof-of-Concept award. The company has since raised £1.5M in seed funding led by Waseda University Ventures, alongside SFC Capital and New Wave Ventures.
In a pilot study with 15 stroke patients, Neubond's device delivered a 30% improvement in range of motion after just one month, with participants reporting gains in daily activities such as handwriting, opening doors, and self-care. The company is now conducting a clinical feasibility study at Charing Cross Hospital in London and is pursuing MHRA certification to bring the device to NHS patients.
