AGent Energy raises $11M to unlock backup generator capacity

Houston startup turns idle backup generators into grid resources during emergencies, targeting 200 GW of untapped capacity as AI loads strain power networks

AGent Energy raises $11M to unlock backup generator capacity

AGent Energy said Tuesday it raised $11 million in a seed round co-led by Spero Ventures and MassMutual Ventures, with participation from Intrepid Investment Management and existing investors CIV and Zero Infinity Partners. The Houston startup, which has now raised $17 million in total according to Axios, installs hardware and software that allows commercial and industrial sites to switch to backup generators during grid emergencies and then sells that capacity back to wholesale power markets.

It's a straightforward pitch: unlock backup generator capacity sitting idle across the United States. The company points to 200 gigawatts of nameplate capacity, roughly equivalent to the output of two hundred large power plants, though the Department of Energy estimates 35 GW of unused backup generation remains available nationwide. Whether that full potential can actually be tapped remains an open question, but AGent Energy has moved quickly to stake a claim in three of the country's largest power markets.

The company operates in ERCOT, MISO, and PJM, providing a combination of its AGent Sentinel hardware and AGent Command Platform software to remotely monitor generators and automatically transfer sites to backup power when grid operators signal stress. Building owners get paid to participate during these events.

"This is the fastest and most capital-efficient way to add new capacity to the grid," said Stephanie Hendricks, co-founder and CEO.

Testing the Model in Real Time

During a July 2026 heat wave, AGent Energy said it remotely switched customer sites off the grid and onto their own backup power in PJM. The Department of Energy has authorized backup generation as a last resort in the Mid-Atlantic during periods of grid stress, noting in emergency orders that more than 35 GW of unused backup generation remains available nationwide.

The customer base spans hospitals, manufacturers, data centers, agriculture sites, universities, water and wastewater facilities, and big-box retail. That breadth matters as load growth propelled by large facilities and data centers creates elevated risks across parts of the U.S. grid, according to assessments from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

RBC Capital Markets estimated earlier this year that U.S. data center developers had announced roughly 101 GW of behind-the-meter natural gas generation, a sign that hyperscalers are planning for energy independence rather than relying solely on utility connections. If those facilities need grid support during emergencies, AGent Energy wants to be ready.

Demand Response Veterans

Hendricks previously served as COO at Voltus, a demand response and distributed energy aggregator. She also held an AI product leadership role at NDimensional and served as a Naval Warfare Intelligence Officer. She holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard and completed ROTC training at MIT.

Co-founder and President Françoise Parker spent time at Voltus as VP of Enterprise Sales and at EnerNOC as Director of Enterprise Sales. She also worked as Managing Director at Tempo Data Centers, where the company said she originated more than 2.5 GW of data center projects in PJM and ERCOT.

Chief Development Officer Todd Krause and Chief Technology Officer Bill Larkins also came from the demand response sector. Larkins built EnerNOC's patented platform for dispatching commercial and industrial distributed generation, according to the company's website. The team's shared background in demand response gives AGent Energy a head start in navigating the complex compliance and market integration requirements that have historically limited backup generator enrollment.

"Stephanie and her team have moved faster than any company we've seen in this space," said Stephen Wemple, principal at Spero Ventures.

A Crowded Field

The space isn't empty. Enchanted Rock builds and operates commercial and industrial microgrids using natural gas backup generators. Earlier this year the company announced it was expanding gen-set production capacity in Houston with plans for more than 1 GW of annual combined capacity in its next-generation RockBlocks.

Enel North America operates demand response and virtual power plant programs that can include backup generators. The company said it dispatched 2,200 MW of demand response during a recent summer heat wave.

PJM and other grid operators already run demand response programs that allow backup generators to participate, though the enrollment process has been slower than some expected. AGent Energy is betting its automated hardware-software combination can streamline participation and unlock capacity that existing programs have struggled to reach.

What's Next

The company declined to disclose valuation, specific use of funds, or the size of its enrolled portfolio. Axios reported the portfolio is "equivalent to the size of a small power plant." AGent Energy previously raised a $6 million seed in August 2025 led by Zero Infinity Partners and CIV, which also added board members Dan Leff and Alex Demeulenaere.

With $17 million now in the bank and a leadership team drawn from the demand response industry's biggest names, AGent Energy has the resources and expertise to scale. Whether 200 GW of idle capacity is realistic or aspirational will depend on how quickly the company can sign up building owners and navigate the regulatory thicket that governs wholesale power markets.
