Avni Secures ₹4 Crore Seed Round for Women's Health Platform

Mumbai-based Avni Wellness raises seed funding led by Proteus Partners to scale its toxin-free menstrual care and cycle nutrition portfolio, targeting 10,000 women micro-entrepreneurs.

Avni Secures ₹4 Crore Seed Round for Women's Health Platform

The founders of Avni Wellness make an unusual pitch: buy our cloth menstrual pads, then stick around for the liposomal iron.

It's a combination that reflects where women's health startups believe the real opportunity lies—not just in selling products that replace tampons and disposables, but in building what they call "cycle wellness" ecosystems. Avni, a Mumbai-area venture founded in 2021, recently closed a ₹4 crore seed round led by Proteus Partners, a Pune early-stage firm. The round, which the company disclosed in mid-2026, also drew a handful of recognizable angels: Puru Gupta and Sreejith Moolayil, the True Elements co-founders whose snack brand was snapped up by Marico; Dr. A. Velumani, who built Thyrocare into a diagnostics powerhouse; and impact investor Somya Nigam.

Sujata Pawar and Apurv Agrawal, the co-founders behind Avni, are threading together product and distribution in ways that blur the line between commerce and community organizing. Their "Lush" brand includes reusable cloth pads—which the company markets with what it describes as an antimicrobial patent claim, though independent confirmation of that filing remains elusive—alongside period panties, menstrual cups, and biodegradable cotton disposables. Then there's the nutrition arm: seed-based snacks and iron supplements formulated around hormonal cycles, a category still finding its legs in the Indian market.

The capital infusion will fuel Avni's digital-first engine, which the company says drives roughly three-quarters of its revenue. That split isn't unusual for direct-to-consumer health brands, but Avni is also pouring resources into what it calls the Avni Sakhi network—a cadre of women micro-entrepreneurs the startup wants to scale to 10,000 over the next year. It's both a distribution bet and a jobs play, the kind of twin narrative that appeals to impact-minded backers.

Proteus Partners' involvement marks its inaugural check into Avni. Gupta, whose consumer goods instincts were honed over years building True Elements, joined Avni as an Operating Partner in May 2026, a few weeks before this round came together—the timing suggests he saw something worth leaning into.

Before this seed raise, Avni had scraped together ₹61 lakh from We Founder Circle. The startup also secured ₹77.5 lakh in exchange for 3.1% equity through "Bharat Ke Super Founders," a reality competition where on-air commitments don't always translate into closed checks on predictable schedules. It's the kind of funding patchwork common among early-stage ventures navigating India's growing but still uneven startup ecosystem.

India's feminine hygiene market is pegged north of $1 billion, with projections pointing toward sustained double-digit expansion. Avni operates in a crowded lane: Pee Safe, Nua, Plush, Sirona, Carmesi. Some have raised significantly more; others have pivoted or stalled. Differentiation is tricky when the core product—whether reusable or disposable—remains commoditized in the eyes of most consumers.

The company reports reaching 300,000 women, and its LinkedIn profile lists a team of somewhere between 2 and 10 employees as of mid-2026—though such self-reported figures warrant caution. Small teams aren't unusual at this stage, but the numbers underscore how much execution risk remains. The founders are eyeing a larger round—₹15 crore over the coming year, they say—which will test whether investors see genuine traction or just another hopeful narrative in a sector that's easier to talk about than to scale.

Pawar and Agrawal are betting that women will pay a premium not just for better products, but for an integrated approach to menstrual and hormonal health. Whether that thesis holds—and whether Avni can build the distribution muscle to prove it—will become clearer as the startup moves from seed capital to the messier work of hitting growth milestones. For now, they've got cash, a handful of credible backers, and a product line that's more ambitious than most. What they do next will determine if Avni becomes a category leader or just another entrant in a market that's long on promise and short on breakout winners.
