GutGutGoose launches personalized probiotics using gut sequencing

YC-backed startup uses shotgun metagenomics and metabolic modeling to create custom probiotic formulas, with retesting to verify colonization and a self-funding data model.

GutGutGoose launches personalized probiotics using gut sequencing

Two founders from Y Combinator's latest cohort are betting that the future of probiotics isn't one-size-fits-all bottles at Whole Foods. It's sequencing your stool sample, modeling which bacteria might actually survive in your digestive tract, and compounding a formula just for you.

GutGutGoose launched in late July with a pitch that lands somewhere between personalized medicine and data play: send in a swab, get a custom probiotic matched to your microbiome, then send another swab three months later to prove the strains colonized. If they don't take hold, the company says it refunds the subscription. The whole loop costs $200 a month under an introductory offer that expired September 1—half the eventual $400 sticker price.

The model rests on shotgun metagenomics, the kind of deep sequencing that produces roughly six gigabytes of data from a single sample. Most consumer probiotics lean on a handful of well-studied strains that benefit broad populations. GutGutGoose sequences more than 300 bacterial species in a customer's gut, then runs metabolic simulations to predict which probiotic candidates will find "open niches" and survive. The computational framework—built on MICOM and AGORA2, which aggregate over 7,000 microbial metabolic reconstructions—spits out a formula with eight to 20 strains, dosed for that individual. Manufacturing takes about three weeks.

Leon Mojarrabi and Anis Mihrshahi, the co-founders, describe the retest cycle as product validation and something more valuable: a self-funding data engine. "Most data companies pay for their data. Ours pays for itself," the company wrote on its Y Combinator profile. Each customer who completes the loop generates a tidy record—one gut, one intervention, one measurable outcome. Stack enough of those records and you might have something pharmaceutical companies or researchers would pay for, though GutGutGoose currently positions itself as a supplement with no disease claims.

Whether the science holds is the sharper question. The startup cites prediction accuracy of 84.7% and 76.7% on two published human cohorts, claiming it reproduced 78.1% accuracy internally—numbers it contrasts with "under 5%" for off-the-shelf products. A September report in Forbes said the founders reported an 83% colonization rate in their alpha users. The company markets itself as "the only microbiome company that re-tests your gut as part of the subscription," though this claim has not been independently verified. No randomized controlled trials have been published yet.

Mojarrabi, who started university at 14 and reportedly became Queensland's youngest Math Olympiad champion, and Mihrshahi, a scholarship recipient in AI and data science, raised $500,000 in June under Y Combinator's standard 2026 structure: $125,000 for 7% equity plus $375,000 on an uncapped SAFE. Before YC, they went through LuminaX HealthTech Accelerator in Australia. By mid-September, GutGutGoose claimed 100-plus customers and a waitlist approaching 2,700 people.

The company is wading into a field that has grown crowded without necessarily getting more rigorous. Flore, formerly Sun Genomics, also uses shotgun metagenomics to formulate custom probiotics. Its test-and-formula packages run $658.50 for six months or $297 for three. Flore says it has served more than 18,000 customers and compounded 40,000 formulations but hasn't published controlled trials. Viome sequences microbial RNA and sells personalized supplements; a 2026 pricing breakdown put first-year costs between $837 and $1,447. Neither company has RCT data demonstrating outcomes specific to their platforms.

Ombre uses cheaper 16S sequencing and recommends pre-made blends rather than compounding per customer. BIOHM offers gut tests paired with standard probiotic SKUs. ZOE, the nutrition platform backed by deep microbiome research, doesn't manufacture pills at all—it builds meal plans.

GutGutGoose's homepage advertises a 180-day money-back guarantee, though the terms page doesn't spell out exactly how the colonization-based refund works. The site went live in late July. The company is seeking introductions to gut-health clinics and patient communities to recruit 80 participants for a study, though no public trial registry entry has surfaced.

The economics are peculiar. At $200 a month during the promotional window—or $400 afterward—GutGutGoose is expensive even by personalized-supplement standards. That's $2,400 to $4,800 a year for probiotics, a category where Amazon sells 60-capsule bottles for under $30. The startup is effectively asking customers to pay for the privilege of generating research data, a bargain that works only if the product delivers enough perceived benefit to justify the cost. Whether enough people will keep swabbing, swallowing, and paying remains an open test.
