Omacom Foundation raises $8M to support open-source Linux

Eight tech CEOs including Tobi Lütke and Patrick Collison each pledge $1M to DHH's nonprofit backing Omarchy Linux and its ecosystem, starting with Hyprland.

Omacom Foundation raises $8M to support open-source Linux

Eight technology executives have collectively pledged $8 million to a new foundation supporting Omarchy Linux, the open-source operating system project spearheaded by David Heinemeier Hansson, according to an announcement late last month. Each of the so-called Founding Patrons committed $1 million of their personal wealth to the Omacom Foundation, which aims to bring Linux credibly into the consumer desktop market after decades of unfulfilled promise.

The roster reads like a who's-who of tech's independent thinkers. Shopify's Tobi Lütke signed on, as did Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Dell Technologies Chairman & CEO Michael Dell, and Block's Jack Dorsey. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, 37signals CEO Jason Fried, and Hansson himself round out the group. All eight are betting their own money that Hansson can accomplish what generations of open-source advocates have not: make Linux genuinely competitive on the desktop against Microsoft and Apple.

Hansson, who created the Ruby on Rails web framework and is co-owner and CTO at 37signals, framed the effort with characteristic bravado on X. He called it an "audacious adventure to finally fulfill the prophecy," invoking the perennial inside joke about "the year of Linux on the desktop" that has circulated in tech circles since the late 1990s. Dorsey was more earnest in his endorsement, noting that both Twitter and Square were "built upon David's work, tools, and principles" and calling Hansson "a force for good."

The foundation will hold trademarks, fund infrastructure, and provide financial backing to the open-source projects that Omarchy depends on, Hansson wrote. Omarchy itself is a Linux distribution Hansson has been developing, marketed on its homepage as "Beautiful, Modern & Opinionated Linux by DHH." The branding reflects Hansson's well-known preference for strong design opinions over committee-driven compromises.

Two days before announcing the foundation, Hansson unveiled what he's calling the Omarchy Core Team. That group includes Lütke as a contributor and Spencer Bull, who will focus on hardware compatibility. The foundation's website lists two additional contribution tiers beyond the million-dollar founding level: Distinguished Patrons at $100,000 each and a general Patrons category marked as coming soon.

The foundation wasted little time deploying its new capital. Its first major expenditure is a multi-year exclusive sponsorship of Hyprland, a Wayland compositor popular among Linux power users, and its lead developer, who goes by Vaxry. The deal runs for three years with a two-year extension option. "What better way to start spending some of the treasure we just raised for the Omacom Foundation than on the most cracked Linux kid in Poland: Vaxry!" Hansson wrote, employing the kind of informal enthusiasm that has become his trademark online.

Under the terms, Vaxry will work on Hyprland full-time, and the project's paid subscription tier, Hyperperks, will become free for all users. The foundation assumes sponsorship responsibilities from previous backers, including 37signals, Butterfly, and Framework. Personal donations to the project will continue to be accepted. The transition is set for October 10.

The Omacom Foundation is moving through the nonprofit incorporation process, though as of late August no IRS determination letter or employer identification number had appeared in public registries. That lag is typical for new organizations navigating federal paperwork. The foundation has not yet published details about its board composition, bylaws, or any formal grant application process beyond the Hyprland sponsorship.

Hansson recently joined Shopify's board of directors and co-owns 37signals with Fried. Omarchy released what it calls version 4.0 "Quattro" in mid-August, and the distribution's plugin marketplace had surpassed 500 offerings by late summer. In his announcement, Hansson declared that the foundation is "fully funded, durable, and ready to accelerate," adding that "all the pieces are now in place" for his stated ambition of transforming Linux into a mainstream desktop platform.

Whether $8 million and Hansson's force of personality can overcome the structural challenges that have kept Linux marginalized on consumer desktops remains an open question. The operating system dominates servers and powers Android phones, but securing even low-single-digit market share on laptops and desktops has proven elusive. Hansson and his backers are betting that better design, focused leadership, and sustained funding can finally change that calculus.
