Photoncycle Raises €15M for Home Hydrogen Storage Revolution

Norwegian startup secures Series A to scale solid-state hydrogen storage systems offering 10,000 kWh capacity per home—targeting Netherlands as net metering ends in 2027.

Photoncycle Raises €15M for Home Hydrogen Storage Revolution

The challenge of storing summer sunshine for winter heating has vexed the renewable energy industry for years. Batteries work well enough for daily cycles—capturing afternoon solar and releasing it after dark—but extending that logic across seasons runs into physics and economics. Lithium-ion systems sized for months of storage would cost as much as the house itself.

Photoncycle, a five-year-old startup based in Oslo, believes it has an answer. On March 4–5, 2026, the company secured €15 million in Series A financing to commercialize a hydrogen-based storage system designed to hold up to 10,000 kilowatt-hours per household. That's enough, in theory, to carry a northern European home through the dark months on energy banked during long summer days.

NordicNinja and Voima Ventures co-led the round, with participation from existing investors Lifeline Ventures, Eviny Ventures, Luminar Ventures, and Momentum. The new capital follows a €5 million seed round announced in April 2024, led by Lifeline Ventures with participation from Luminar Ventures, Momentum Partners, and Eviny Ventures.

Whether the technology can deliver on that promise at residential scale—and at a price point homeowners will accept—is the question Photoncycle now confronts as it moves from pilots to production.

The Physics of Seasonal Ambition

The core technology stores hydrogen in a solid material, keeping it at low pressure and near-ambient temperature. The company pairs this with an electrolyzer to produce the hydrogen, a fuel cell to convert it back to electricity, a heat pump, and a lithium-ion battery for short-term balancing. According to Photoncycle, the underground storage unit occupies roughly three cubic meters and offers capacity more than 750 times that of typical residential lithium-ion batteries.

That's the pitch, anyway. Independent verification of those performance claims remains limited, as does real-world data on degradation rates and round-trip efficiency losses over multiple seasonal cycles.

Photoncycle operates on a subscription model, an approach intended to soften the upfront cost shock for early adopters. The company projects energy cost savings of 10 to 50 percent compared to current household expenses—estimates that have not been independently validated—though those figures depend heavily on local electricity pricing, solar yields, and usage patterns. Mileage, as they say, will vary.

Denmark First, Then the Dutch Opportunity

Denmark serves as the company's initial commercial proving ground. Photoncycle has been accepting pre-orders there and reports strong early interest, though it has not disclosed specific order volumes or deposit structures.

The Netherlands represents the second target. Timing matters here. The Dutch government plans to phase out its net metering policy on January 1, 2027, a regulatory shift that will upend the economics of rooftop solar. Under net metering, households receive full retail credit for excess generation sent back to the grid. When that disappears, storing energy on-site rather than exporting it becomes far more attractive. Photoncycle sees an opening.

The company intends to use the fresh capital to fund commercial rollout in both markets and to launch the first phase of an industrialization plan. At full scale, Photoncycle is targeting a manufacturing platform capable of producing 1.4 terawatt-hours of annual storage capacity. The first phase is expected to come online in 2027, though the company has not detailed the intermediate steps or capital requirements between here and there.

That's a steep ramp. For context, global residential battery storage deployments totaled somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 gigawatt-hours in 2024, according to industry estimates. Photoncycle's stated ambition would represent a substantial fraction of that market—if the company can get there.

The Scaling Question

Photoncycle operates with a team of roughly 21 employees from offices at Oslo Science Park. The company has built a full-scale pilot unit, now operational and in the process of moving from component validation to integrated system testing. That's progress, but it's also the point where many hardware startups stumble. Prototypes are one thing. Manufacturing at volume is another.

Beyond Denmark and the Netherlands, the startup has identified Japan and the United States as longer-term opportunities, though it has not announced specific entry timelines. Both markets have their own regulatory idiosyncrasies and competitive dynamics. Getting traction in Europe first would help, but it's not a guarantee of success elsewhere.

For now, the company faces the uncomfortable middle stretch: past the seed stage, pre-revenue at scale, armed with capital but not yet certain it can cross the valley between promising technology and profitable deployment.

Perhaps that's exactly where a Series A company should be. Time will tell whether Photoncycle's hydrogen storage bet pays off, or whether seasonal energy storage remains just out of reach for another funding cycle.
