Redefine Surgery raises $10M to scale AI surgical training

Surgeon-backed startup closes one of healthcare's largest pre-seed rounds to bring AI-powered real-time guidance and trackerless navigation to operating rooms.

Redefine Surgery raises $10M to scale AI surgical training

Redefine Surgery, an Edison, New Jersey-based medical robotics startup, announced September 24 it has closed a $10 million pre-seed round funded largely by physician investors. The company declined to disclose the names of participating funds or individuals, though Dealroom pegged the raise in the top 5% of U.S. health-tech seed deals by size.

The capital will fund development of what Redefine calls a "surgical intelligence platform" that marries computer vision with robotic components for orthopedic procedures. Unlike conventional navigation systems that rely on trackers attached to surgical instruments or bone, the company's approach uses vision-based registration that it claims delivers accuracy within roughly one millimeter and one degree in seconds during key surgical steps. That data comes from early laboratory testing, according to the company's website. The platform has not yet received FDA clearance and remains in development.

An Industry Push Toward Surgical Intelligence

Redefine's fundraise lands during a broader industry pivot toward what Johnson & Johnson has called "surgical intelligence." J&J filed a de novo application for its Ottava surgical robot in February and released a report in August framing the category as the next chapter in digital surgery. Other players are staking out adjacent territory: Zeta Surgical won FDA 510(k) clearance in May to expand neurosurgery indications for its navigation system, while Activ Surgical has built a computer-vision tool focused on perfusion visualization. Training platforms such as Osso VR and fundamental XR (formerly FundamentalVR, rebranded in July) have raised larger rounds but target a different slice of the surgical workflow.

The timing reflects growing confidence among investors that computer vision and artificial intelligence can address persistent inefficiencies in operating rooms, though regulatory pathways remain complex and timelines uncertain.

Catalyst Partnership Targets Cost and Speed

On September 23, Redefine announced a collaboration with Catalyst OrthoScience, a Naples, Florida-based maker of shoulder-replacement devices. Under the agreement, Catalyst will serve as the "Founding Partner" for shoulder arthroplasty applications. The companies projected the partnership could yield up to four times greater efficiency in procedure time and cut technology costs by a factor of ten, according to Catalyst's announcement. Those figures were not independently verified.

Redefine has collected procedural data across multiple surgical specialties to train proprietary AI models, working with more than 25 surgeon advisors, the company said. The startup exhibited at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting in New Orleans in March and is presenting this week at the International Congress on Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow in Vancouver.

Peter Verrillo, CEO and co-founder, brings two decades of experience in orthopedic and surgical technology and previously co-founded Enhatch. Ignacio Tzoumas, COO and co-founder, is described by the company as a finance executive with experience guiding companies through IPOs and acquisitions, though those specifics were not independently confirmed. Stephen Potter rounds out the founding team as CTO. LinkedIn data suggests the company employs between two and ten people.

Redefine participated in Techstars Boston in September 2024, securing the accelerator's standard $120,000 investment, according to Techstars announcements.

"Closing this round and establishing our partnership with Catalyst are two important steps toward bringing surgical intelligence into everyday practice," Verrillo said in the press release. Anthony Miniaci, president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, added that the industry has "an opportunity to move beyond the traditional boundaries of surgical technology and rethink how artificial intelligence and surgical robotics can improve surgery."

Whether Redefine's vision-based navigation proves as robust in operating rooms as in the lab remains to be seen. For now, the company joins a crowded field racing to prove that software and sensors can make surgeries faster, cheaper, and more precise.
