Fit Collective Raises £3M to Fix Fashion's £230B Returns Crisis

London startup uses AI to predict fit failures before production, tackling the 70% of returns caused by poor sizing. Marks largest UK pre-seed for a solo female founder.

Fit Collective Raises £3M to Fix Fashion's £230B Returns Crisis

Phoebe Gormley made her name cutting suits for women on Savile Row—at age 20, no less, when she opened the street's first female-focused tailoring house. Now she's turned her attention to a different kind of fit problem, one measured not in inches of fabric but in billions of pounds of waste.

Her startup, Fit Collective, just closed a £3 million pre-seed round that quietly became the largest raised by a solo female founder in UK pre-seed territory. AlbionVC led the November 4 investment, joined by SuperSeed, True Global, January Ventures, and Sie Ventures, plus a £324,000 Innovate UK Smart Grant for good measure.

The pitch is straightforward, if ambitious: fix fashion's fit crisis before clothes ever reach a warehouse shelf.

"We're not adding another body scanner widget to the checkout page," Gormley says, her tone carrying the mild impatience of someone who's heard that pitch too many times. "We're fixing the garment before it's made."

When Returns Eat Everything

The numbers behind fashion's returns epidemic have gone from troubling to genuinely alarming. US retail returns alone hit $890 billion in 2024. Online apparel accounted for $38 billion of that mountain of rejected merchandise. Women's luxury categories? Return rates pushing 60%, leaving menswear in the dust.

McKinsey research pins roughly 70% of returns on a single culprit: poor fit. Not buyer's remorse, not color mismatches, not quality complaints. Just clothes that don't fit the bodies that ordered them.

For fashion brands already operating on razor-thin margins—particularly those in the premium and luxury space—this creates a vicious cycle. High returns cut into profitability. Sustainability commitments (increasingly mandatory, not optional) make destroying or landfilling those returns unacceptable. And customers, burned by past purchases, grow warier of buying without trying.

Enter Fit Collective's "Fit Cloud," an AI platform that ingests product specifications, returns data, customer feedback, and material behavior patterns. The system flags which SKUs will likely fail before production starts, then recommends specific pattern adjustments measured in centimeters. A tweak here, a lengthening there—changes that could save hundreds of thousands per item, according to the company.

It's predictive fit analytics, essentially. The kind of thing that sounds obvious in hindsight but required someone with Gormley's unusual background—part traditional tailoring, part tech founder—to actually build.

Early Wins, With Caveats

Since launching in late 2023, Fit Collective has signed 10 clients. The roster includes British brands like Rixo (the dress label beloved by a certain set of London professionals), Boden, Ro & Zo, L'Estrange, and The Sports Edit, the activewear platform that Marks & Spencer acquired.

AlbionVC, which led the round, says early customers have cut returns between 10% and 30%. That's a wide range, admittedly, and the company notes that results depend heavily on production cycles—typically six to 12 months before brands see meaningful impact.

For smaller brands, there's a one-click Shopify integration. Fit Collective operates on SaaS subscription pricing: roughly £1,000 monthly for a £10 million womenswear brand. That's digestible enough for mid-sized operations testing the waters.

The more compelling hook for brands may be how Fit Collective quantifies potential revenue gains. One example on the company's site identifies a 5% fit issue for a $1 billion retailer—worth $423,000 annually on a single SKU. That translates abstract "better fit" promises into line items CFOs can actually evaluate.

Still, questions linger. Ten clients is promising for a pre-seed company, but fashion's full of startups that looked good early before hitting scaling walls. And while cutting returns by 10% to 30% sounds impressive, the variance suggests results may vary wildly depending on brand category, price point, and customer base.

Timing Is Everything (Maybe)

The fresh capital will fund team expansion—machine learning engineers, primarily—and deeper integrations with larger global brands. Fit Collective currently employs around nine people, a figure that'll presumably climb quickly.

The timing might prove fortuitous, or at least well-considered. Brussels is tightening the screws on textile waste through extended producer responsibility schemes and potential bans on destroying unsold apparel. Suddenly, pre-production fit optimization isn't just about saving money. It's about staying compliant.

Whether that regulatory tailwind translates into massive adoption remains an open question. Fashion brands aren't exactly known for swift tech integration, particularly when it involves retooling production workflows.

But Gormley has something most fashion tech founders lack: credibility with the industry itself. Her Savile Row background means she speaks the language of pattern-makers and production managers, not just Silicon Valley investors.

That matters, perhaps more than the founders themselves expected when they started building.

Breaking Records, Quietly

The £3 million haul surpasses previous UK pre-seed records for solo female founders—Jude's £2 million healthtech raise in 2022 and Hey Savi's £2.2 million fashion tech round in 2024. It's the kind of milestone that gets mentioned in founder diversity panels and investor roundups.

Whether it translates into a durable business capable of genuinely reshaping fashion's economics? That's the harder question, and one that £3 million in early capital can't yet answer.

For now, Fit Collective has runway, clients, and a problem worth solving. In the unforgiving world of fashion tech—where buzzwords outnumber success stories by wide margins—that's not nothing.
