Andreas Kling is Founder and President at Ladybird Browser Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building a truly independent web browser engine from scratch. He previously worked at Apple on Safari and WebKit, and at Nokia on KHTML.
Andreas created SerenityOS in 2018 after completing drug rehab, which became a global open source community with over 1,000 contributors. He began working full-time on open source projects in 2021, supported by community donations.
Andreas is an industry veteran with browser development experience since 2005, having contributed to KHTML, WebKit, and Safari. He is Swedish and based in Sweden, and has built a popular YouTube channel documenting his development work.
Ladybird was spun off from SerenityOS in September 2022 and established as a nonprofit in July 2024 with a $1 million donation from GitHub co-founder Chris Wanstrath. The initiative is funded by major sponsors including Shopify, Cloudflare, FUTO, and 37signals.
Ladybird is building a novel browser engine without using code from Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit, targeting an alpha release in 2026. As of March 2025, Ladybird ranked fourth on Web Platform Tests behind Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.
