Athanasios (Ath) Caramanolis is Co-Founder and CEO of Soma Energy, a Vancouver-based AI energy intelligence platform helping power producers and data centers unlock grid capacity in real time. He is a recognized leader in large-scale energy optimization, bringing deep operational expertise from managing hyperscale power systems at Amazon Web Services.
Ath joined Amazon in 2018 to create and lead the renewable energy optimization team at AWS, where he scaled the portfolio to 10 gigawatts and negotiated over $1 billion in clean energy deals, helping Amazon become the world's largest corporate clean energy buyer. His firsthand experience navigating grid constraints, interconnection delays, and power management at scale became the foundation for Soma Energy.
Ath recognized that the bottleneck to AI infrastructure growth was not a lack of energy, but a lack of intelligent orchestration, leading him to build Soma Energy around the principle that better software, not more infrastructure, unlocks power faster. His vision is to act as a control plane for electrons, enabling the grid to self-drive with AI.
Ath co-founded Soma Energy in February 2024 alongside CTO Mario Souto and Chief AI Scientist Henrique Hoeltgebaum, collectively bringing over 20 years of experience trading power across major U.S. energy markets including CAISO, ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, and WECC. The company raised $7 million in seed and pre-seed funding led by Category Ventures, with participation from Haystack, RRE Ventures, Uncork Capital, TO VC, and Panache Ventures.
Soma Energy is already optimizing 2 gigawatts of electricity for power-producing clients and is actively serving five data center customers, including H5 Data Centers. With 18 employees and fresh capital, the company is accelerating deployments across North America to address surging AI-driven power demand.
