Ben Metcalfe is Co-Founder of WP Engine, the pioneering managed WordPress hosting platform he helped build from the ground up in 2010, championing WordPress as serious enterprise infrastructure at a time when the market viewed hosting as a commodity.
Ben began his career at the BBC, where he helped build the BBC News website and co-created the BBC's open developer platform, Backstage, before moving to San Francisco and joining MySpace to launch their developer platform.
A serial entrepreneur with a track record of being early to transformative arguments, Ben has consistently identified and acted on major technology shifts before mainstream consensus, from open data at the BBC to managed WordPress hosting.
After WP Engine, Ben led public policy R&D at Uber, became a Principal at Ridge Ventures, and launched Monochrome Capital in 2020, a seed fund focused on technically complex B2B companies in cloud infrastructure, security, AI/ML, and developer tools.
Under Ben's early leadership, WP Engine grew to tens of millions in revenue, scaled to serve 1.5 million customers across 150+ countries, and achieved unicorn status with a $1B valuation, raising over $290M in total funding.
