
Claire Hughes Johnson is a Corporate Officer and Advisor at Stripe, a global fintech company building economic infrastructure for the internet. She previously served as COO from 2014 to 2021, scaling the company from under 200 to over 7,000 employees.
Claire earned a BA with honors in English and American Literature from Brown University and an MBA from Yale School of Management. She spent 10 years at Google in various leadership roles, including VP of Google's self-driving car project, and helped scale the company from 1,800 to 57,000 employees.
Claire is the author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Scaling People: Tactics for Management and Company Building, published by Stripe Press in 2023 and named one of the best books of the year by Bloomberg and The Economist. She serves on the boards of HubSpot, Ameresco, Aurora Innovation, The Atlantic, and Walmart.
At Stripe, Claire led business operations, sales, marketing, customer support, risk, and all people functions including recruiting and HR. At Google, she led teams behind Gmail, Google Checkout, Google Apps, and managed the Global Online Sales organization generating approximately $11 billion annually.
Under Claire's operational leadership, Stripe grew its enterprise user base to include Amazon, Ford, Salesforce, BMW, and Maersk, while maintaining strong momentum with startups. She helped build scalable operating systems and management practices that became the foundation for Stripe's rapid global expansion and its current valuation of $65 billion.
