
Ajay Gummalla is Co-Founder and VP of Engineering at Bedrock Robotics, an autonomous construction technology company transforming heavy equipment with AI-powered retrofit systems. He brings over a decade of robotics and hardware expertise from his leadership roles at Google and Waymo.
Ajay spent 7 years as Director of Systems and Programs at Waymo and 13 years as Hardware Technical Lead and Manager at Google. He earned his Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology and previously worked at Rayspan Corporation and San Diego Research Center.
Ajay has deep expertise in wireless communications, systems architecture, and building end-to-end learned systems for autonomous vehicles. He helped pioneer the development and deployment of the first autonomous vehicles on public roads at Waymo.
Bedrock Robotics emerged from stealth in July 2025 with $80 million in Seed and Series A funding led by Eclipse and 8VC, followed by a $270 million Series B in February 2026, reaching a $1.75 billion valuation. The company is testing autonomous excavators across Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, and California with major contractors.
Bedrock completed a large-scale supervised autonomy deployment moving over 65,000 cubic yards on a 130-acre manufacturing site. The company targets fully operator-less excavator deployments in 2026 to address the construction industry's 500,000 worker shortage.
