Bereket Engida is the Founder and CEO of Better Auth, a pioneering open-source TypeScript authentication framework rapidly gaining global adoption among developers and AI startups.
A self-taught programmer from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Bereket began coding at 18 after deciding to build an e-commerce app himself when a friend declined to help, sparking a lifelong passion for developer tooling.
Bereket built the entire Better Auth product from his bedroom in Ethiopia before ever setting foot in the U.S., and contributed to several open-source TypeScript libraries including Better Call, Better Fetch, and Loglib.
After graduating from Y Combinator's spring 2025 batch, only the third Ethiopian startup ever to do so, Bereket raised $5M in seed funding from Peak XV, Y Combinator, P1 Ventures, and Chapter One.
Since its GitHub launch in September 2024, Better Auth has surpassed 150,000 weekly downloads, 15,000 GitHub stars, and a community of over 6,000 Discord members, marking Peak XV's first direct investment in an African founder.
