
Chris Gibson, Ph.D., is Co-Founder and Board Chair of Recursion, a clinical stage TechBio company leveraging automation and AI to decode biology and radically improve lives. He transitioned from CEO to Board Chair in January 2025 after leading the company for 12 years.
Chris earned degrees in bioengineering and management from Rice University in 2005, then completed his Ph.D. in bioengineering at the University of Utah in 2013 while developing the core technology that seeded Recursion. He also completed an entrepreneurship certificate at Stanford GSB.
Chris developed the technology underlying Recursion as part of his MD/PhD work in the lab of co-founder Dr. Dean Li at University of Utah. He took a leave from medical school to build Recursion and has been awarded the 2013 TEDMED Front Line Scholar.
Under Chris's leadership, Recursion raised over $1 billion in funding, went public on Nasdaq in 2021 (RXRX), and secured partnerships with Roche, Genentech, Bayer, and NVIDIA valued at up to $20 billion. The company has generated $500 million in partnership payments to date.
Chris led Recursion from an ambitious idea to a publicly traded company valued at over $2 billion with 800 employees across global offices and eight therapeutics in clinical development. He founded Altitude Lab in 2020 to support early-stage biotech startups and serves on the boards of BioHive and the Salt Lake Tribune.
