Alan Liu is CEO and Co-Founder of Quintessent, a Santa Barbara-based deep tech company pioneering quantum dot-based optical connectivity solutions to eliminate data movement bottlenecks in AI infrastructure.
Alan earned his PhD from UC Santa Barbara under Professor John Bowers, conducting pioneering research on quantum dot lasers for silicon photonics that now forms Quintessent's core technology.
Prior to founding Quintessent, Alan served as a photonics consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, advising on optical interconnect R&D programs for DARPA and ARPA-E, establishing him as a leading expert in photonics, materials science, and electrical engineering.
Alan co-founded Quintessent in 2019 alongside Professor John Bowers, spinning the company out of over a decade of UCSB research to commercialize heterogeneous silicon photonics and quantum dot gain media for AI data centers.
Quintessent raised a $40M oversubscribed Series A in August 2026 led by Cycle Capital with participation from Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures and Ciena, and began customer sampling of its first product, a single-chip quantum dot DWDM comb laser for rapidly scaling AI clusters.
