Alessandro Troisi is Co-Founder of Apoello, an AI-enabled materials discovery platform spun out from the University of Liverpool in October 2025. He is Professor of Chemistry and Chair of Theory and Simulation of Materials at the University of Liverpool, where he has worked since 2017.
Alessandro obtained his PhD in Bologna, Italy in 2002, conducted postdoctoral research at Northwestern University, and became a full professor at the University of Warwick in 2010. He has over 20 years of experience developing computational models for organic electronics materials.
Alessandro has been awarded three prestigious European Research Council grants: an ERC Starting Grant in 2009, an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2014, and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2021. He received the Royal Society of Chemistry's Marlow Medal in 2007 for his contributions to theoretical chemistry.
Apoello secured 470,000 pounds in pre-seed funding from SFC Capital, the British Business Bank, and the University of Liverpool. The company emerged from the EIC Transition project DiaDEM, which developed a digital platform combining large-scale molecular data with advanced computational modeling for materials discovery.
Alessandro's work focuses on accelerating materials discovery to address net-zero challenges through digital materials design and AI. His research has applications in organic electronics, renewable energy technologies, clean energy storage, and sustainable manufacturing, with Apoello now working to commercialize these innovations for industrial partners.
